Chapter 10: Routing Protocols
Routing protocols fall into distance-vector, link-state, hybrid, and path-vector types. Administrative distance decides which route source wins, and metrics only break ties between routes from the same protocol.
Administrative distance
Lower numbers are trusted more. When two updates list the same remote network, the router checks AD first and installs the route with the lowest AD. A route with AD 255 is never used.
| Source | AD |
|---|---|
| Connected | 0 |
| Static | 1 |
| EIGRP (internal) | 90 |
| IGRP | 100 |
| OSPF | 110 |
| RIP | 120 |
| External EIGRP | 170 |
| Unknown | 255 (never used) |
