IP Routing: Follow the Packet

Build a justified packet journey: local delivery, routed delivery, then a different network.

Click or tap an answer to match it into the next position in the journey. Keyboard: Tab to a card, Enter or Space to choose. Mouse dragging onto the target is optional.

Correct completion earns 100 once per round. A hint reduces that round’s award to 75. Retries earn no extra points; first-attempt accuracy and hint use are tracked separately. No timer or speed bonus.

Progress stays in this browser when storage is available. These local scores are solo practice records.

Learning objectives
  • Use the mask to decide local versus remote.
  • Choose the correct ARP target with an empty cache.
  • Distinguish local MAC endpoints from IP endpoints.
  • Explain switching without decrementing IP TTL.
  • Explain frame removal and local IP delivery.
  • Use subnet comparison to choose a gateway.
  • Resolve a local next-hop MAC for a remote IP destination.
  • Construct a frame to the gateway while retaining IP endpoints.
  • Apply longest-prefix match rather than first/default route.
  • Explain router TTL reduction without NAT endpoint changes.
  • Use the selected exit network for address resolution.
  • Explain which link-layer addresses change after routing.
  • Recognize destination delivery and end-to-end IP addresses.
  • Apply a different subnet and a populated ARP cache.
  • Apply longest-prefix match with /26 versus /24 and default.
  • Predict TTL and both address layers on a different network.
